From Valdés Peninsula to Los Alerces National Park

Through Los Altares and Piedra Parada. Km: 825

A route that crosses the province of Chubut from the deep-blue sea to the green lakes of the Andes Mountain Range. It begins in Puerto Madryn, the base city to explore the Valdés Peninsula, and ends at Los Alerces National Park, 32 km away from Esquel. Halfway through this route, you will find the huge stone walls of Los Altares, on the Chubut River, and further ahead, Piedra Parada, a 240-metre-high totem, stands alone amidst the steppe.

  • Road type: 65% asphalt. The 284 km road section to reach Piedra Parada (between Paso de los Indios and Gualjaina) is made of gravel. If you want to do this same route (Puerto Madryn - Los Alerces National Park) only by asphalt road, the distance is 700 km along national routes 25 and 40.

Puerto Madryn and the Valdés Peninsula

Puerto Madryn is the most important coastal city in Chubut and is also an unmissable part of the Mar Patagónico region. In addition, it is the National Capital of Buceo: in the crystalline waters of the San José and Nuevo gulfs, submarine bautismos are performed to discover the fascinating world of the sea, in addition to snorkeling with sea lions. It has a wide variety of hotels and a wide gastronomic offer.

This city is the gateway to Península Valdés (World Heritage), a protected natural area with cliffs, bays, islands and sand beaches. You can navigate the gulfs and see whales, penguins, wolves and elephant seals.

Trelew

​​Trelew is the second most important city in the province. It is located on National Route 3, on the left bank of the Chubut River. It is worth visiting the Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum, a one-of-its-kind scientific centre in South America. Its interpretive tours tell the story of the life forms that lived in Patagonia millions of years ago. Some of its findings are the largest and the smallest dinosaurs in the world. Another unmissable place is the Trelew Astronomical Centre, where you will be able to discover the spectacular Patagonian skies. The digital projections, the visual exhibition room, the outdoor theme park and the two observatories (night and solar) take visitors on a fantastic journey into space. Guided tours are offered.

Gaiman

A Welsh settlement that began to flourish in the middle of the steppe in 1865. Among rose bushes and poplars, you can see chapels and houses made of pink bricks and rocks, irrigation canals that run alongside the river and tea houses where you can taste the legendary black cake, a ritual that is a feast for the palate. There are also cultural circuits, agrotourism, museums and a paleontological park.

Villa Dique Florentino Ameghino and Florentino Ameghino Dam

A green valley that stands out against the surrounding plateau. Between canyons and volcanic rocks, the dam is a great work of engineering on the banks of the Chubut River. Its turquoise waters are a paradise for nautical sports and sport fishing. The tourist village is the departure point for different activities such as trekking, horseback riding, rappelling, photographic safaris and guided visits to a cave with cave paintings. There are beaches, grills, accommodation services, campsites and varied cuisine in the area.

Los Altares

It is the largest protected natural area in Chubut and a great geological heritage of Argentina. Its impressive red cliffs over the Chubut River rise like altars in a landscape from another time, where eaves, caves and walls with cave paintings are hidden that you can discover on foot. Paso de los Indios

It has accommodation and gastronomy services. 212 km from this town and towards the north along the gravel RP 12, you reach the Piedra Parada Protected Natural Area, one of the must-sees of the steppe. If you prefer to continue on asphalt, the next stops with services are Tecka (167 km away) and Esquel (260 km away).

Paso del sapo

Small town in the heart of the steppe and on the banks of the Chubut River. The Piedra Parada scenic route (RP 12) begins (or ends) here. In Paso del Sapo you can fish, walk and horseback ride.

Piedra parada

Amidst the Chubut River valley area, this impressive rock (formed as a result of a volcanic eruption that took place more than 50 million years ago) with a base of 100 metres and a height of 240 metres juts out majestically. It is a Protected Nature Area with magnificent canyons, caves and an exquisite colour palette of yellow, green, grey, red, and pink minerals. Considered one of the best places for sport climbing in South America, Piedra Parada also has walking, cycling and horseback riding trails that lead to a group of caves with cave paintings. Camping is allowed. The town of Gualjaina, with accommodation and basic services, is 50 km away. On the other side of the river, a 3 km trail leads to La Buitrera Canyon, a corridor formed by rocks of more than 100 metres in height. This walking tour takes approximately 90 minutes.

Esquel

The Patagonian steppe and the Andean forest combine around this city at the foot of the Cordillera, in a valley of glacial origin. You can get to know the history of the region by visiting the Historical Museum of the City and the Capilla Seion that marks the presence of the first Welsh families.

5 km from the center is La Zeta, an urban nature reserve with a lagoon, spa and kayak rental, ideal for a midday outing. In winter, you can visit the Centro de Actividades de Montaña La Hoya, 12 km from the city.

La Trochita

This long-distance train, which until 1993 connected the cities and towns of the region with the rest of the country, today has become a tourist trail in the south of Andean Patagonia. The steam machines and wagons of the Viejo Expreso Patagónico allow you to travel in time while enjoying unique landscapes. In addition, the old stations of Esquel, Nahuel Pan and El Maitén have museums and fairs to know the railway history of the region, as well as the culture of the peoples that inhabit these Patagonian lands. It is currently possible to make the route that goes from Esquel to Nahuel Pan, which is about 19 kilometers long. Another option is to move to the town of El Maitén and start the train ride from there to Ñorquinco. It is recommended to check the frequencies and get the tickets in advance on your website.

This park is home to the largest portion of Valdivian forest in Argentina. Although it can be visited for the day, it is best to stay 2 or 3 days to walk its trails and do some activities such as kayaking, sailing or horseback riding. There are campsites and various accommodation options. It has been declared a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Useful information

- If you are planning to travel by plane, the city of Trelew has an airport. Another option may be to fly to Esquel and do this circuit in the opposite direction.

 

- You can enjoy this route throughout the year. In winter, rain, snow and frost can make the tour difficult.

 

- Puerto Madryn, Trelew and Esquel are the main cities in this circuit. They offer all kinds of accommodation: campsites, hostels, cottages, inns and hotels of different categories.

 

- Although Scenic Route 25 is alphalt paved, some sections are in bad condition. Drive carefully.

 

- If you enjoy climbing, Piedra Parada and La Buitrera Canyon offer several climbing routes with varying degrees of difficulty. Before entering the area, you must register at the Gualjaina Tourist Office or notify the Wildlife Ranger that you are going to practice this activity. Important: before travelling, always check which climbing activities are allowed.

 

- Tip: If you are planning to visit Los Alerces National Park in summer, make all the necessary bookings. It is usually at full capacity.



- Remember to camp only in areas where camping is allowed. Put your trash in bags and take them with you. Only start camp fires in areas where this is allowed, and put them out with plenty of water.
